How to Share Photos with Family Sharing

Ever since Apple has introduced Family Sharing in iOS 8, everyone in a family who has their own Apple ID with the same credit card can now download and share App/iTunes Store purchases, Photos, location (Find My iPhone), Reminders, and Calendar events. But your family does have to have their Apple ID based in the same country. Also, parents can approve their kids’ purchased right from their device. In this how-to, I will show you how to share photos with Family Sharing.

How to Set It Up

  1. User accounts. If you haven’t done so already, set up each person with their own user account.
  2. Apple IDs for everyone. If any of your family members lack an Apple ID, go online and sign up.
  3. Create a Family Group. You can perform this on your Mac or on your iOS device.
  • On Mac: Go to System Preferences > iCloud > Set up Family and then follow the on-screen
  • On iOS device: Tap Settings > iCloud > tap Set Up Family Sharing > tap Get Started.

  1. Invite People to Join the Family Group. Now that you have a Family Group, you can invite family member to join it.
  • On Mac: Go to System Preferences > iCloud and click Manage Family > Add Family Member or click the “+” button.
  • On iOS Device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Family > Add Family Member.
  1. You’ll need each family member’s email address to send them email invitation. Once your invitation winds up in the recipient’s email inbox, check the content and the click Accept.
  1. To check whether your family sharing invitation has been accepted, go to the iCloud System Preference and select Manage Family. Select a person’s name to see the status of their invitation.

How to Share Photos with Family Sharing

  1. Launch the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the Shared button in the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap on the Sharing tab in the upper left hand corner to get to the main iCloud Photo Sharing list of streams.
  4. Select Family Stream and click on “+” icon.
  5. Select the photos you want to add and then tap Done in the upper right hand corner.
  6. Type the description if you’d like and then tap Post in the pop-up window.

Those photos have now been added to the Family album and will be shared to the Family album on all Family Member’s devices. It is important to note that family members can hide content, which won’t be shared with other family members. And another feature of Family Sharing is Ask to Buy which allows the family organizer to approve any purchase or free download request from the children. It is not doubt an optional buy useful feature to control spending by kids. You can also create Apple IDs for children if necessary.
